Tim joined Maner Costerisan in 1998 and serves as principal in the firm’s tax department. In his current role, he performs comprehensive tax related services including tax planning, tax research, tax return reviews, and IRS and state tax examinations. Tim primarily works with individuals and businesses across a range of industries such as manufacturing, retail, wholesale distribution, cooperatives, auto dealerships, railroad, regulated housing, partnerships and S corporations.
Prior to joining Maner Costerisan, Tim spent three years in the tax department of “Big 4” accounting firm Deloitte & Touche and five years as tax manager at Michigan National Corporation. He began his career at Peat Marwick Mitchell & Co., now known as KPMG, where he spent 14 years in audit and tax.
With a broad tax background of over 30 years, Tim is known as the technical expert of Maner Costerisan’s tax department. Colleagues look to him for guidance when they are unfamiliar with certain areas of tax or if they simply want feedback on their ideas. Clients also trust Tim’s knowledge and technical skills, as he has helped numerous clients experience significant tax savings over the years. Specifically, he conducted a Nexus study to minimize a client’s state taxes by apportioning income, which generated $400,000 in refunds. Tim also previously structured the sale of an S corporation to minimize built-in gains tax.
Tim decided to pursue an accounting career because he enjoyed problem solving, which is often a necessary attribute of professionals in the industry. Today, he credits his success to the genuine interest he shows in providing the best services possible to his clients.
Tim is originally from the Detroit area and currently resides in East Lansing. He and his wife have five children. Tim’s interests include University of Michigan football and sports of all kinds. In his free time, he also enjoys gardening.
