Fall is a time when many of us pause to reflect on the months prior and show gratitude for our many blessings. But, for the team at Maner Costerisan, a Lansing-based business advisory and public accounting firm, November also brings with it one of the firm’s most anticipated events focused on giving back, its annual Maner Cares Day of Impact.

On the first Thursday of every November, Maner closes its doors for the afternoon and sends team members to volunteer with nonprofits making a difference in communities across Michigan. This year’s event was especially memorable, with teams coming together to volunteer in person after hosting last year’s event virtually.

“Maner Costerisan’s mission is to enable others to reach their potential,” said firm president Trey Williams. “It’s at the heart of everything we do. Our commitment to supporting our clients, empowering our staff, and investing in our community is what makes Maner Costerisan a great place to work. Volunteering together with our local nonprofits, many of whom are clients, is just one way we can give back to the communities we call home.”

Empowering the Community Through Financial Education

As trusted business advisors and CPAs, we’re regularly called upon to simplify complex topics. These skills make us uniquely positioned to provide financial education and training to our community. This natural connection inspired some focus areas of the 2021 Day of Impact, a piece of the overall Maner Cares community relations program.

“Giving back is embedded in the fabric of our firm,” said Sarah Jennings, Principal, and leader of the firm’s community engagement efforts and nonprofit team. “We are excited to be able to use our strengths in communication and financial education to further the mission of various organizations and see this as something we can build from for the future.”

As part of the Day of Impact, Maner collaborated with Communities First Inc., a Flint-based nonprofit committed to building healthy, vibrant communities through economic development, affordable housing, and innovative programming, to host an afternoon of 1:1 personal finance meetings with community members.

Hosted at five housing developments in Detroit, Flint, and Lansing, Maner staff discussed banking, budgeting, and debt management, among other financial topics, with participants.

State-wide Community Impact

In total, more than 115 Maner team members split their time volunteering with nonprofits across the country, including 15 in the Great Lakes State. Staff hung holiday lights at Lansing’s Potter Park Zoo, raked leaves and winterized homes for seniors with Senior Neighbors in West Michigan, assisted with demolition for remodeling of a residential treatment center for Mid-Michigan Recovery Services, and made fleece blankets for children in Michigan hospitals with materials from Detroit-based Fleece and Thank You, among many other projects. Remote workers also took part in the action and volunteered at organizations near and dear to their hearts.

Maner Costerisan’s mission is to enable others to reach their potential. Through education, engagement, and empowerment, the firm brings that commitment to life in its community engagement program, Maner Cares.
