Our busy season is in full swing, and important tax deadlines are only a few weeks away. It’s important to get your federal, state, and local returns or extensions filed to avoid any penalties or interest or to receive any refunds you may be owed for the 2024 reporting year.
Ensure Your Tax Preparation Runs Smoothly By:
- Compiling all your tax documents: Gather W-2s, 1099s, mortgage interest statements, and any other applicable tax documents that are required to file your return.
- Knowing which deductions and/or credits you may be eligible for: Guarantee that you claim deductions such as medical expenses, charitable contributions, student loan interest, or HSA contributions. Credits such as Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit or Lifetime Learning Credit may also be available.
- Reviewing any life changes that occurred in 2024: Marriage, divorce, having a child, buying a home, or job changes may affect your tax return.
If you can’t file your return by April 15, consider filing a federal, state, or city extension(s) for additional time. This gives you an extra six months to file your returns. However, you are required to pay any taxes owed to avoid penalties and interest.
For Maner clients, we handle the entire extension process- estimating your tax liability, submitting the forms, and providing clear guidance for payment methods for your estimated tax due.
Significant Things to Consider
Have you been affected by a natural disaster? The IRS has extended tax deadlines in certain states impacted by federally declared natural disasters that occurred in 2024. See the IRS’s website or reach out to us for additional information if you believe you may qualify. Currently, there are no automatic extensions for Michigan residents due to a natural disaster.
Are you concerned about your 2025 return? If you have or expect any life changes or are curious about potential changes to tax laws, now is a good time to ensure you are making informed decisions. Our tax experts are here to guide and advise you with professional tax planning to help you plan for any potential changes.
